§ 12.20.070. Wall signs.

Latest version.
  • A.

    Wall signs shall include all painted on or flat signs of solid base construction which are placed against or attached to an exterior wall of a building.

    B.

    In Districts 4, 5 and 6, each building shall be allowed one front wall sign, one side wall sign (if a side wall is available) and, if a rear entrance for customers is provided, one rear wall sign, which shall have the following restrictions:

    1.

    The wall sign must be attached to the building at a height of not less than eight feet above the sidewalk or ground; provided, however, if the sign projects less than three inches from the wall and is not illuminated then there shall be no minimum height requirement;

    2.

    The wall sign shall not protrude more than eighteen inches beyond the wall of the building to which it is attached;

    3.

    The lettering or sign face shall run parallel to the face of the building;

    4.

    The wall sign shall not extend beyond the building;

    5.

    The maximum display area for a front or side wall sign shall be thirty-two square feet;

    6.

    The maximum display area for a rear wall sign shall be fifteen square feet.

    C.

    In the business district, projecting signs shall be allowed and shall count as a wall sign, with the following restrictions:

    1.

    One projecting sign shall be allowed per business with a maximum display area of fifteen square feet;

    2.

    If more than one projecting sign is desired to be placed on a building (due to their being more than one business located within the building) each additional projecting sign shall have a maximum display area of ten square feet, and shall not be located closer than ten feet from any other sign;

    3.

    The lowest portion of a projecting sign must be at least ten feet above the ground or sidewalk;

    4.

    Unless a variance is granted regarding the maximum display area of fifteen square feet as provided in this chapter, no projection sign shall extend out from the building more than five feet and shall be no wider than three feet;

    5.

    The sign face must be perpendicular to the building;

    6.

    Sign illumination shall be consistent with the Design Guidelines for the Community of Byron, 2001 edition;

    7.

    The projecting sign must be installed in such a manner that it does not move or swing and must be securely attached to the building so that it shall support the sign and handle wind load for a sign of its size and shape;

    8.

    Prior to issuance of a permit for a projecting sign, the owner must file with the city a liability insurance policy, or certification of insurance, issued by an insurance company authorized to do business in the state of Illinois, evidencing coverage limits of at least fifty thousand dollars for property damage and three hundred thousand dollars for public liability.

    D.

    Variances to the maximum display area requirements for wall signs shall be considered when the wall upon which the sign is to be attached or painted is so large as to support and justify an increase in sign size.
